How records are verified
- INDEPENDENTLY_CHECKED
- We confirmed this against the organisation's own website.
- SELF_REPORTED
- Submitted by the organisation or on its behalf, and reviewed by us. Not yet independently confirmed.
- SELF_REPORTED_CONFIRMED
- Submitted to us, and since confirmed against the organisation's own website.
Filter with ?verification=INDEPENDENTLY_CHECKED if you only want records we checked ourselves.
What is not in it
- No email addresses. Not omitted from the export — never held. The table has no such column. Entries carry a link to the organisation’s own contact page instead.
- No individual people. The site lists named researchers because a page about a public figure’s public work is defensible. Handing their details out as a bulk redistributable download is a different act, and we decided against it.
- No prices, stock or commercial terms. This is a reference, not a catalogue.
How it was built, and where it is weak
The corpus began as a compiled list that turned out to be substantially wrong: 86% of its contact details were incorrect and 110 of its domains had never been registered. Every surviving record was re-checked against the organisation’s own website, and organisations that had closed, been acquired, or never existed were recorded as such rather than quietly dropped.
It is a snapshot, and it decays. Sixty-one organisations in this corpus were acquired and forty-seven closed within six months. Every record carries the date it was last checked, so you can judge for yourself rather than trust a claim of freshness. Where the date is old, treat the record as a lead.
Something wrong? Every entry has a form that reaches a person, and corrections are the point rather than an imposition.
Licence
CC BY 4.0 — use it, change it, build a product on it, sell that product. The only condition is attribution: credit nanoMani and link back to the directory.
Version 4.0 specifically, because it is the first to license the EU and UK database right, which for a factual compilation is the right that actually applies. In the United States facts are not copyrightable at all, so for a US reuser this is a statement of norms rather than a licence with teeth — attribution is asked for because it is the convention that keeps open data worth publishing.
